How To Get Out Of a Rut? Three Simple Rules
We will fight this.
What’s a rut?
A rut can happen to anyone. It can afflict a mother or a manager, a software engineer or a student, a heartbroken person, a married person, a successful person, a not so successful person…
Oxford dictionaries defines a rut as a dull, boring, unproductive routine that’s difficult to change. Mundane. Cumbersome. Unexcited.
We’ve all been there. Some of us still are there.
If you’ve never been there, then read this to help someone who needs it. And pass it on. Be a good friend, okay? : )
How To Get Out Of a Rut? Three Simple Rules
Define your purpose.
The Why Factor. Why do you do what you do? What drives you to pursue your path? If you find the answer is murky or other than what you’d like to hear, maybe it’s time to revise your intentions.
Don’t waste all your time doing something you have no passion for or interest in. If you’re not even remotely excited by your current activities, consider if you need to change things up, or talk to someone- professional therapy or counselling might help you decipher inhibiting behaviours. Side note, self-help may be a better route, especially if you cannot access legitimate professionals.
Additionally, you need to start making self-discoveries. Think about your who, what and whys. If you’re living someone else’s dream, or trying to please a person who’s perpetually unpleased and are feeling constantly unfulfilled, get some boundaries now!
All that we do, our living our dying, our prayer and our sacrifice is all for The One, Allah. If we seek to please Allah, we will find true fulfillment it whatever we do.
Fixing our intentions is the first step to breaking that cursed rut.
Cut out the bad habits.
Spending far too much time scrolling through that social media feed? Commenting unnecessarily on trivial matters? Allowing emotional vampires to suck the life out of you, with their constant sob stories, complaints, negativity and general dissatisfaction with (the blessing that is) life?
Get The Flip-flops Out of there ASAP.
Indeed, if you’re a natural empath and you love helping people, know that it cannot come at a cost to your own happiness. Additionally, if you know you’re prone to procrastinating due to a perfectionistic tendancy, then block the channels you know you digress through.
Moreover, if you’re always spending time around people, maybe it’s time to take a good dose of solitude.
Thus, the second step to break the rut is will-power, baby.
Do something new.
If you’re a stable person, it’s cool having a routine. You love the familiar. You don’t like change. The comfort zone is boss. But did you know, it’s also the recipe for stagnation?
So what to do?
Get up, get out!
Do new things. Join new groups. Try new activities. As long as it’s all decent, change things up a little.
Consider changing who you hang around. This is not to say cut out your close ones, or people who you’re responsible for. However, if you’re stuck in an environment where pessimism, discontentment and misery is the norm, you need to get out for the sake of your sanity, and find company with optimists, content, happy, strong and accomplished people.
Maybe you can come back and bring your new-found optimism and energy to enrich others, i.e. those who’ve been stuck in the rut of negativity, doom, gloom and victimhood for a good portion of their lives. Be the change you want to see in others. Walk the talk.
Thus, thirdly, to escape the rut, embrace change! Do something new, be with winners and become an inspiration for others.
